The thought of Back-to-School shopping is enough to make anyone cringe! To kids, this annual outing signals the end of summer, and therefore, the end of fun. To adults, it means the emptying of wallets and the need for overtime. But parents, it doesn’t need to be that way! Heed these simple tips and at least someone will be smiling come the first day of school!
Make a Plan: Before you drag the kids out the door, take some time to create a detailed plan. Write down everything your kids need and include such pertinent information as the type, quantity, and preferred brand of each item. If you can, write down the limit you wish to spend. By having all of these details laid out in black-and-white, you will be more likely to stay on track and less likely to fall for your children’s pleas for the cherry scented post-it notes they need to have. It will also help you avoid having to settle for second-rate products.
Don’t Bring Too Much Money: The general rule of thumb is to go shopping with just enough money, plus a little extra. This way, if your plan doesn’t keep your shopping under control, your ability to pay for your items will. Bring enough money to cover the cost of the necessary items, plus a little extra in case you encounter a to-die-for deal! The easiest way to do this is to bring cash and to leave your credit cards at home. This way the temptation is completely removed.
Choose Safety and Quality over Esthetics: Make sure that you and your little learner are choosing items for their quality rather than their surface appeal. While there is no harm in your little one choosing the cheetah print binder, as a parent or guardian, you should be sure to inspect the item to ensure it is safe, built to last, and affordable.
